Taking to her private Instagram account, Charli described Brat as intentionally provocative in design. Its cover was meant to be very provocative, featuring a lot of text. She wrote, "The artwork for Brat will be obnoxious, arrogant, and bold. Some people will hate it. [The cover] will be heavily text-based, either font on a plain background or painted on a wall or disregarded object." When I first saw the cover art for Charli XCX’s Brat, I was repulsed. And then I realized that the ugliness was part of its bizarre appeal.

Like many of brat’s songs, figuring out the subject of "Girl, so confusing" isn’t difficult — which is why Charli reached out to Lorde ahead of its release. "I had to go through the process of telling her that this song is about her and her being OK with that first," Charli explains. "I was trying to meet up with her for almost a year, and we kept having this weird, like, we were [going to], then we wouldn’t.

The absolute stranglehold that Charli XCX had on the world this summer is comparable to Beatlemania. With the release of her album Brat, Charli hurled us all into a hyper-sexualized, sweaty, clubby fugue state.
